Start by downloading our membership application (32K). If you are applying for general membership contact the appropriate chapter president or membership chair. If you are applying for associate or affiliate membership, fill out the application and mail or fax directly to the National Office.

On the local level, ASMPLI is a vital and interesting organization. Our business practices meetings offer expert advice. Our general meetings bring in well-known and inspiring photographers. Additionally, our ASMPLI chapter can provide you with a list of members willing to share advice or act as mentors to less experienced photographers. ASMPLI encourages student photographers, young professionals, and assistants by offering membership at lower fees.
ASMPLI amounts to much more than brochures and meetings. An individual photographer has little ability to protest against laws that erode publication rights or which impose burdensome taxes or reporting rules. But ASMPLI, as a cooperative organization of many photographers, has the clout to lobby congress and to protect all photographers. Member dues support these efforts.
Information, advocacy, publications, consultations, insurance, advice and more
The benefits of ASMPLI membership are many and varied. Some are tangible: publications, business information and discounts with key suppliers. Other benefits are intangible, including being part of a vast network of your peers and the camaraderie inherent in a vital association of professional photographers.
The tangible benefits are easy to enumerate (and we do that below). However, one of the most valuable benefits is intangible: the security of having a powerful, respected and knowledgeable trade association in your corner at all times. ASMPLILI members can get in touch with the national office and receive advice on virtually any business or legal situation affecting publication photographers.
Find a Photographer
All General members are given a listing in ASMPLIs Find a Photographer database. This portal to buyers brings clients directly to your doorstep. As a General member, you can have a general-purpose portfolio that includes up to seven images, a written description of your business, and links to all your web sites. You can supplement that with specialty portfolios that showcase your strengths in each of your photographic specialties.
FAP is a powerful tool to get the buyers attention. Buyers can search for photographers who practice in a certain metropolitan area or who have specialized skills. They can then examine your images, click through to your web site or pick up the phone.
Resources on ASMPLI.org
Use and share the extensive business resources available on our web site. The ASMPLI Copyright Tutorial walks you through the process of registering copyrights and explains why it's worth while to do it early and often. The tutorial on Model and Property Releases explains when you do or don't need releases, explains the legal language, and offers hints on getting signatures. (Members can customize the release language.) And for all your contract documents, we offer a set of recommended Terms and Conditions.
ASMPLI Bulletin
The Society's magazine, published five times a year, presents news and features, is free to all members and affiliates.

ASMPLI MEMBERSHIP CATEGORIES
General Members
Photographer must be actively and professionally engaged in publication photography with three or more consecutive years of substantial publication experience from date of first published work. This publication record must generate the major source (over 50%) of earned income. General members are the only voting Members of the Society and receive all publications and benefits of the Society at no additional charge. General Members are the only members listed in Find a Photographer on ASMPLI.org. A review of publication experience
is required and applicants must be sponsored by two General members of ASMPLI.
One time Find a Photographer fee $50.00 / Dues $300.00
Associate Members
This category includes all photographers not qualified for General membership. The category does not require moving up to general in three years, and the dues will be constant. Associate members have most of the benefits of general members, but they will not be listed on Find a Photographer, and they do not have a vote.
Dues: $200.00
Emerging
Sub category of associate. This is a one-year only category serving as a transition for photographers who are starting out or are assistants. After one year, the dues will automatically be billed at the full associate member level. Benefits are the same as a full associate.
Dues: $125.00
Affiliate Members
Affiliates are non-voting members, and receive the same benefits as an Associate member.
Dues: $200.00
Individual
This affiliation is for individuals, self employed or employed by organizations, who service, supply, sell or educate photographers.
Dues: $200.00
Student
Students at the college or post secondary level. Written proof of enrollment from a department head or admissions office, or class schedule on official school letterhead must accompany application. An individual can remain a student member for one year after completion of degree program. Student members receive a copy of the ASMPLI Professional Business Practices in Photography Book at the time application is approved.
Dues: $55.00.
